Nintendo's Classic Remakes For Switch 2 Are Seemingly Just Getting Started

Nintendo's filled part of the Switch 2 calendar this year with remakes of classic N64 titles. We first had Star Fox in June, which has now shifted more than a million units, and this week saw the return of the legendary Zelda game, Ocarina of Time.

If you're hoping to see more classics return, it seems promising at this stage. According to Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo's SVP of product development and publishing, new games and remakes are of "equal importance" in the Nintendo stable right now.

Here's what else he had to say about the importance of remakes during a chat with Polygon earlier this week:

Nate Bihldorff: “There are fans of every single IP that we have out there. Of course, having new games in those series is wonderful, and I look forward to them as much as anyone else does, but there’s also a deep satisfaction in revisiting games that were very, very special, like Ocarina of Time… But it’s also important to think about how many people had never played the original, and for them, the remake of Ocarina of Time is going to be an absolutely brand-new, 2026 experience, and one that I just cannot wait for them to get their hands on.”

Although remakes can be creatively risky, Nintendo's efforts during the Switch 2 generation so far have been positively received by fans and critics alike. As Bihldorff reminds veteran players, remakes are also a great way to introduce new players who have actually never played games like Ocarina of Time before. And for these newcomers, it is a brand-new experience!

So, what could be next? Nintendo hasn't officially said anything just yet, but Ocarina's follow-up story Majora's Mask is already a popular (and obvious) pick, and the game engine is ready to go!
