As we heard earlier today, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has sold nearly nine million copies. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa pointed out that it has already surpassed sales of the previous entry within about six months following launch.
Furukawa said the following:
As we continue to offer new ways to play, a single title can sometimes have a major impact on our business as a whole. One example is Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. We are grateful for the positive response from consumers to its distinctive gameplay, and the title has reached more consumers around the world than we anticipated.
Titles that generate this level of interest can draw in people who are new to the series, as well as those who do not often play games. This has reminded us once again of the power of such titles to energize the entire platform, including
by driving hardware sales. This chart shows unit sales for the series, divided into Japan and overseas markets. Following the first title, which was released exclusively in Japan in 2009, we expanded the series overseas with Tomodachi Life.
The latest title, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, had sold a cumulative total of 8.83 million units worldwide as of the end of September 2026. Within approximately six months of launch, it has already surpassed sales of the previous title.
We believe that even a long-running series can reach more consumers around the world and achieve significant sales growth by introducing new ways to play.
