At Tata Daewoo, a noise and vibration engineer with no software background builds a VR tool that lets anyone experience a truck’s noise sources before a physical prototype exists. At PALFINGER, an industrial crane salesperson checks lifting capacity in a browser in a few clicks. Three different jobs, one common need: 3D data that reaches the people who need it.
The Immersive Edge is a round-up of Unity resources for industrial teams working with real-time 3D. This October edition collects 21 resources published in September and October 2026. In case you missed it, read the August edition.
Key takeaways
- The handoff is where 3D programs stall. Four guides explain where CAD data gets stuck, how the digital thread breaks, and how to choose a pipeline that fixes both.
- Simulation replaces costly repetition. Race driving, aircraft maintenance, reactor procedures, and truck noise testing, all moved into real-time 3D.
- AI is entering industrial workflows with guardrails. You can bring your own vetted model to the Unity Editor, and a KITECH project generates labeled training data from a digital twin.
- Simulation enables data-based judgements. ART S.p.A. measures cockpit layouts in VR, TomTom tests lane guidance in a simulator, and Tata Daewoo validates noise before it builds a prototype.
- Accelerate projects with templates. A new HMI template runs at up to 60 fps on a Raspberry Pi 5, and six Unity Studio templates are ready to adapt.
Which customers are replacing slow, costly repetition?
From LiDAR to lap times: building a driving simulator from scan data in Unity
The Mercedes-AMG F1 Academy Simulator is a joint experience from Mercedes-AMG and Unity for the 2026 F1 Academy season. Cruden, a global leader in simulation technology, built the software in Unity. The pipeline starts with customer-supplied LiDAR scan data, uses the High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) for rendering, and achieves sub-millisecond timing between the motion, visual, and physics systems.
ART S.p.A. turns cockpit design opinions into data with Unity and VR
Style teams and HMI teams can struggle to find alignment on automotive cockpit layouts, and the arguments aren’t really settled until they build a physical prototype. ART S.p.A., an Italian Tier 1 automotive supplier, built Cockpit Design Suite on Unity Industry to test layouts in VR. Hand and gaze tracking record where testers look and what they reach for, and a dashboard compares variants.
How Pinnacle Solutions is transforming aircraft maintenance training with Unity-powered virtual twins
Pinnacle Solutions builds Virtual Maintenance Trainers on its Unity-based VXT architecture. The latest, for the T-7A Red Hawk, uses a virtual twin of about 80,000 unique meshes built from CAD and engineering data. One Unity project produces PC, web, and XR builds from the same lesson data.
How Project Ember is transforming burn care training through mixed reality
Project Ember, a clinician-led program from Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, overlays realistic digital burns onto physical mannequins. Instructors can vary severity, size, location, cause, age, and skin tone, so one platform replaces a range of prosthetic mannequins. Project Ember won a 2026 Unity for Humanity Award and Grant. Unity’s customers took to the stages and shared their experiences of Unity’s real-time 3D tools.
How Lufthansa Cargo is training aircraft loading supervisors in VR with Unity
Supervisor training normally needs a live flight, an expensive simulator, or both. NMY and Lufthansa Cargo built RampVR to remove that dependency. Trainees walk around a freighter and find randomly generated mistakes on cargo containers and pallets, while trainers run several sessions remotely. Lufthansa Aviation Training reports a 75% reduction in training costs, and Lufthansa Cargo estimates up to 50% fewer operational faults.
TomTom and Unity: How AI, maps and real-time 3D take us beyond navigation
Paul Hesen, VP of Product at TomTom, argues that drivers experience what they see and trust, not the algorithms behind it. In a TomTom simulator study built in Unity, lane-level guidance reduced navigation errors by about 40%. They discovered that 3D detail matters most at start-up, on arrival, and at complex junctions. But on the move, the road comes first.
All day in the cab: How Unicontrol built a Unity HMI that operators actually like
Mark Povlsen, Software Manager at Unicontrol, explains why a machine control app should feel like a game. Live 3D and color-coded bars replace numbers: green is on target, yellow is approaching, red means too deep. The Android-native app runs on a range of tablets, so distributors can match hardware to what is suitable for each market.
How PALFINGER put real-time crane simulation in the browser with Unity
PALFINGER built PALSHOW with Unity WebGL so sales teams get a lifting-capacity answer in a couple of clicks. The team moved it out of a heavy desktop application and reused its calculation framework in the browser. PALSHOW now has 600+ active users a month, and releases rose from two or three a year to more than 12.
How CEA rehearses fusion reactor operations in Unity before building a mockup
Stéphane Gazzotti, who leads the VIPER platform at CEA’s fusion institute, shows 15 years of simulation work for the WEST and ITER tokamaks (experimental fusion reactors used to study nuclear fusion). One ITER room holds 30 million polygons, and the overall data runs to 20 terabytes. The application runs through procedures of about 500 steps, including operators in ventilated suits who cannot hear. The team uses it to cut radiation exposure by removing unnecessary steps, and builds one physical mockup instead of several.
Tata Daewoo: validating vehicle noise, vibration and harshness in virtual reality
Jinyoung Park, an NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) engineer at Tata Daewoo Mobility, built a standalone VR tool that lets anyone hear and inspect a truck’s noise sources at full scale. Trucks come in many variants, so prototyping each one is not an option. Park used Unity Asset Transformer to cut one CAD model from 29 million triangles to about 2.7 million so it runs on a headset. He reports about 95% accuracy on the NVH spectrum.
KITECH: Building a factory digital twin and synthetic data pipeline for manufacturing AI
Dr. Hong-In Won of the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology and Woojin Park of Unity Korea walk through a 14-week, two-part project. First, a foundry digital twin built from point cloud data, with no CAD. Second, a synthetic data pipeline for human-robot collaboration, where bounding boxes and segmentation labels come from the simulation state instead of manual annotation. The dataset has 17 episodes and more than 100,000 raw frames, synchronized at 20 Hz.
How do you enable access to CAD data for non-engineers?
Four guides and a webinar on the foundation for every 3D project: the data.
Your CAD data is stuck in engineering - how to free it
Your company owns thousands of accurate 3D models, and almost nobody outside engineering has the knowledge required to use those models in their native tool. This guide argues the handoff is the problem, not the authoring tool. The proposed solution is a five-stage process: ingest, convert, access, render, and deploy. This guide includes a short questionnaire to help you assess your current process.
Digital thread: what it is, and where it breaks
The digital thread is the connected record of a product’s data across its lifecycle. A digital twin is the state; the thread is the history that ensures the twin is accurate. The break happens in one step; when a CAD model becomes a lightweight mesh, the part number, bill of materials, and revision often stay behind. Six practices keep identity intact, starting with writing the PLM object ID and revision onto the converted asset.
How to choose a CAD-to-real-time-3D pipeline
This is an evaluation framework. It separates viewers, converters, and pipelines, then walks through six stages and what to test at each stage. The article ends with a 15-question vendor checklist to help you decide the way forward.
Which Asset Transformer tool should you use?
There are several Unity Asset Transformer tools to choose from, but the deciding factors are: how many assets do you have, and what level of hands-on involvement do you want? Asset Transformer Studio suits manual work on individual assets. Asset Transformer Toolkit applies rule sets inside the Unity Editor. Asset Transformer SDK batch-processes on your own infrastructure. Pipeline Automation and Asset Manager handle on-demand transformations.
Accelerate the digital thread from CAD to CFD with Unity Industry
Chris Mulberry, Senior Solution Architect on the Unity Industry Solutions team, talks you through an example where he makes one change, and it’s automatically reflected across the whole pipeline. A SolidWorks update syncs to Unity Asset Manager, Pipeline Automation and Asset Transformer convert it to GLB, and a Unity 6 simulation picks up the new assembly at runtime with no rebuild. Reviewers can leave feedback tied to a specific asset version.
Can AI work inside industrial workflows?
AI security in Unity for Industry teams
Two objections stall AI evaluations: vendor lock-in and data trust. Unity CLI connects the model you have already vetted (Claude, Codex, or an on-prem model) to the Unity Editor. With the Unity Pipeline package, an agent can read the scene hierarchy, edit scripts, inspect components, and read console output. You own your input and output data, and sharing usage data with Unity is optional.
Break the skills bottleneck: Make 3D data prep self-serve
Industrial 3D workflows often depend on a few specialists who have in-depth knowledge of complex software, and training others on that software is not a scalable solution. Staff Solutions Architects Simon Nagel and Jerome Maurey-Delaunay argue for bringing the tools to the user. Asset Manager, Asset Transformer, Pipeline Automation, and the Editor all expose APIs, so technical teams can build custom workflows and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers on top. The session covers reusable skills, guardrails for what an agent can do alone, and token costs.
Custom scripting in Pipeline Automation
Custom Script nodes let Pipeline Automation run your own Python scripts alongside standard Asset Manager steps, including Asset Transformer SDK operations. The video builds one complete pipeline. It takes a SolidWorks model, tags its metadata, decimates it, cleans the hierarchy, fills tessellation holes, swaps materials, exports an FBX, and delivers a separate optimized asset. The scripts are available to download.
How do developers and designers start faster?
New for Unity Industry: Automotive HMI sample for embedded-style hardware
This updated version of the 2021 HMI template requires Unity 6.3 or later and opens from the Unity Hub. It includes a digital instrument cluster, an interactive 3D vehicle, climate controls, an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) view backed by a live traffic simulation, and a theme system. Unity chose a Raspberry Pi 5 to show up to 60 fps on constrained hardware. Data, UI, and 3D vehicle layers stay separate, so developers can feed in their own data and designers can restyle.
Build your interactive 3D prototypes faster by customizing the Unity Studio templates
Unity Studio ships with six templates: Car Review, Configurator, Oil Pump Blocker Demo, Training Application, HMI Mockup, and Distribution Center. Two video tutorials show how to repurpose them; one turns a chair configurator into a car configurator, and the other turns a car review into an architectural walk-through. In both, you swap in your own assets from Unity Asset Manager and keep the cameras, lighting, hotspots, and UI.
