There are few places in gaming quite as unpleasant to visit as the Moscow Metro, but that hasn’t stopped us wanting to go back.

METRO Redux has received a major next-gen update, bringing improved visuals, higher frame rates and a range of technical enhancements to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

Available now, the upgrade gives both METRO 2033 Redux and METRO Last Light Redux a fresh lease of life on current-generation consoles. Better still, existing owners can upgrade for free.

At A Glance

  • Games: METRO 2033 Redux and METRO Last Light Redux
  • Update: METRO Redux Next-Gen Update
  • Developer: 4A Games
  • Publisher: Deep Silver
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC
  • Upgrade: Free for existing owners

A Better Way To Experience The Moscow Metro

The METRO Redux update is designed to make both games feel at home on modern hardware without changing the experiences that made them so popular in the first place.

Players can expect improved lighting, shadows, shading, particle effects and animations, alongside enhanced sound quality and spatial audio support. There’s also support for hardware tessellation and displacement, helping to bring additional detail to the environments.

Performance gets a substantial boost too, with true 4K resolution at 60FPS and upscaled 4K at up to 120FPS on supported hardware.

For Xbox Series X owners, the update also brings TSR upscaling and antialiasing support, while Xbox Series X|S players benefit from further platform-specific improvements, including power-optimised mode support and impulse trigger functionality.

Two Classic Campaigns, One Unforgiving World

For anyone yet to experience the series, METRO Redux bundles together two substantial single-player adventures based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s bestselling novels.

METRO 2033 Redux introduces Artyom and his struggle for survival in the underground tunnels of Moscow. With humanity clinging to existence beneath the ruins of civilisation, you’ll face mutants, hostile survivors and some rather unsettling supernatural threats.

METRO Last Light Redux continues the journey, taking players further into the fractured world of the Metro as Artyom’s actions help determine the future of humanity.

Both games offer Spartan and Survival play styles, allowing players to choose between a more combat-focused experience and a slower, resource-conscious approach. Ranger Mode also returns for those who really want to make life difficult, removing the HUD and making ammunition and supplies considerably more precious.

Get Ready For METRO 2039

There’s a particularly good reason to revisit these adventures right now. The next mainline instalment, METRO 2039, is scheduled to launch on February 4th 2027, introducing players to a new chapter as The Stranger.

With that release just around the corner, this update offers a convenient opportunity to catch up on the events and characters that helped establish the series.

The METRO Redux bundle is available on the Xbox Store for £23.99, containing both games. Purchased individually, METRO 2033 Redux and METRO Last Light Redux are listed at £14.99 each, making the bundle the better-value option.

If you’ve been meaning to return to the tunnels, or have somehow managed to avoid Artyom’s adventures until now, there’s never been a better time to put on that gas mask.
