PlayStation Blackout Had ‘No Significant Change At All’, Analyst Says

An analyst has revealed that the PlayStation Blackout wasn’t able to bring any significant changes to the player numbers or engagement.

Last month, a PlayStation Blackout initiative took place, during which players were encouraged to refrain from using their consoles or any PlayStation services between August 23 and 30. This protest was in response to the company’s decision to cease disc production. Players have now received an update regarding the outcome of this protest, but unfortunately, the results are not very impressive.

PlayStation Blackout Had No Visible Impact

Circan’s Mat Piscatella recently put out the top 10 US titles by weekly active users through his latest BlueSky post. In the same thread, the analyst was asked whether the team observed any changes that could’ve been attributed to the PlayStation Blackout. Piscatella answered, stating, “No. There was no significant change at all in player count or engagement in our tracking.”

The PlayStation Blackout movement faced some criticisms, particularly regarding its designated duration of one week. Many players speculated that this limited timeframe made the protest more likely to fail. Additionally, the timing of the protest coincided with Gamescom 2026, when many players were away from their consoles attending the event, which may have further diminished its impact.

When the blackout ended, DoesItPlay, which was spearheading the movement, stated that “the minimum requirement for the blackout has been reached.” Afdding that there will be more chances in the future to take action again.”

For those wondering about the weekly active user rankings, Fortnite, NBA 2K27, and Roblox topped the charts for PlayStation; Fortnite, Roblox, and Call of Duty led the way for XBOX; and on Steam, Wardogs, Counter-Strike 2, and Helldivers 2 were on top.
