An official Munchkin TTRPG is coming to crowdfunding. Steve Jackson Games' iconic party game, which began as a broad parody of tropes and clichés found in fantasy RPGs, will become a fantasy RPG courtesy of Lynnvander Studios.
The Munchkin TTRPG Announcement
The Munchkin TTRPG crowdfunding project will adapt the world and humor of Munchkin into the rules system of Dungeons & Dragons 5.5 edition. The campaign will produce two books. The Ye Olde Rulebook contains the core rules of the game, with a focus on looting rooms, backstabbing allies, and causing complete chaos. The second book, The Deadliest Dungeon, is a prewritten dungeon crawl with monsters, traps, and a ton of loot.
Since this is a TTRPG based on Munchkin, the game will be packed with jokes aimed at the hobby and various D&D tropes. For example, the books will include new character subclasses like the Oath of the Killjoy Paladin and the College of Nihilism Bard, and built-in cheating mechanics called "Cheeky Cheating," where you can bend the rules to get more gold.
The Munchkin TTRPG reveal is the franchise coming full circle. The original card game, created in 2001, started as a parody of old-school fantasy dungeon crawls. Specifically, it lampooned munchkins: players who only focus on getting powerful magic items and creating overpowered characters. Forget the story and the well-being of the party; just get more gold.
That behavior has fallen out of favor with modern Dungeons & Dragons' focus on player expression and spectacle. But the pure party-game shenanigans the card game has brought to the concept have helped the franchise stay strong for over 25 years across multiple expansions and spin-offs. Now, with this TTRPG adaptation, that rush of getting gold, dealing with bad puns, and getting sandbagged by strange dungeon hazards can go further.
If you follow the campaign for the Munchkin TTRPG before it goes live, you will receive a sticker sheet with your pledge at no additional cost.
